| For this series
of small collages, |
| I wanted to
work with a very |
| limited palette,
using only the |
| natural colors
of old book pages |
| and the black
of ink. I treated some |
| pages with
India ink, brushing a |
| puddle of
clear water onto the |
| pages, adding
a drop of ink and |
| then swirling
the paper to create |
| random shapes.
I love the way |
| granules of
black settle out at the |
| edges of the
brush strokes, and |
| I like the
shiny areas created where |
| the ink is
densest. Most of the |
| papers are
Asian, some from quite |
| old printed
books and some from |
|
humble old accounting
books,
|
| in elegant
brush calligraphy. |
| I love the
worm holes in these, |
| and finding
the occasional worm |
| that died
on the job. |
| |
| The other
papers include pages |
| from a Gaelic
bible and a French |
| novel. |
